Indian students just out of school. Planning for how to prepare to ace the
entrance examinations to gain entry into the engineering program of choice and
institution of dream starts right after class 10th board exam.
Students juggle between the study load for Board examinations as
well as preparations for engineering entrances through classes 11th and 12th.
Joint Entrance Examination being the premier most entrance test for engineering
in the country, every engineering aspirant tries their hand at it for sure.
However, not all can qualify the test to be able to gain entry in their
preferred engineering college.
In order to accommodate the multitude of aspirants who wish to
pursue engineering as a career, there are several other national as well as
state level entrance examinations that are conducted every year. The table

As mentioned earlier, JEE Main is the premier most
national-level engineering entrance test conducted by NTA, qualifying which can
lead to admissions at any one of the 31 National Institute of Technology
(NITs), 23 Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) and several other
Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTI). JEE Main is a computer-based
test, split into two papers, Paper I being for admission to B.E/B. Tech
programs while Paper II is for B.Arch./B. Planning. 2019 onwards the exam will
be held twice before the commencement of admissions for
the academic session.
JEE Advanced, conducted by one of the 7 zonal IITs, is again a
national-level online entrance examination to gain entry into the 23 IITs
primarily, though several other reputed institutes also consider the score. Only
candidates who qualify JEE Main are eligible to appear for the test. Only the
students qualifying JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.
Candidates need to attempt two mandatory papers in JEE Advanced
The Birla Institute of Technology and Science conducts BITSAT 2019 for admission into the engineering and
pharma programs at its 3 campuses (Pilani, Goa, and Hyderabad). BITSAT is an
annual, national-level, online test, for which candidates need to have at least
80% aggregate score in their Board Exams with no less than 60% each in Physics,
Chemistry &
Mathematics/Biology.
The National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA), conducted
annually at the national level by the Council of Architecture is specifically
for candidates interested in a career in Architecture. NATA is a paper-based
test that evaluates candidates on the basis of general aptitude, mathematics
and drawing skills.
Several Common Entrance Tests like the Karnataka Common Entrance
Exam (KCET), Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHCET) etc. are conducted as
annual, state-level tests for admission into Engineering/Technology,
Architecture, Medical, Dental, Pharma etc. programs at the Government,
Government-aided and unaided colleges of the respective states. Usually,
admissions through Common Entrance Tests are reserved for candidates belonging
to the respective states only.
There are other state-level engineering entrances as well like
the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE), Uttar Pradesh State
Engineering Entrance (UPSEE), Jharkhand Engineering Entrance Competitive
Examination (JEECE) etc. that are conducted by the individual states for
admission into engineering and other programs at participating institutes based
in the respective state.
Private universities like
Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), COMEDK UGET, SRM University, Indian
Maritime University, Punjab Technical University, Indraprastha University etc.
also conduct their own entrance tests for admissions into their respective
engineering programs
